We’re getting back to basics. There are two important questions that you need to answer that will help you accomplish any goal.
What is your “why?” Put another way, what is the value that will be added to your life if you were to achieve the goal?
What is a positive mantra that you can repeat to yourself?
Last week, we tackled a heavy topic as I discussed the importance of getting to the bottom of what is weighing us down or holding us back from achieving success. Let’s continue that conversation in the context of determining your “why” and creating a positive affirmation.
Whenever I am helping others get to the root of what is getting in the way, invariably feelings of overwhelm, fear, or other daunting emotions present themselves. Many people struggle with where to begin or how to let go of whatever it is that has been buried for some time.
I am giving you two simple things to do this week.
Whether you want to clear out physical clutter or begin to let go of the relationships that drain you, doing these two simple things will help you accomplish any goal.
You need to:
Know your “why.”
Affirm yourself with a positive statement.
Being clear on those two things will not only help you discover the answers as to how to move forward, but they will also help you tackle any goal that you are striving to achieve.
Let’s use the example of cleaning up your physical space.
Why are you doing it? You need a crystal clear answer as to why you are tackling this massive reorganization project that will at times be long and tiring. It is a process that can be highly emotional as well, since we grow attached to our things.
We will assume that you have taken stock of all the physical things that are weighing you down. Plus, you have thought about, journaled, or done whatever you needed to do to bring clarity to the situation so that you understand the reasons why you have accumulated the excess clutter. Now, it’s time to begin sorting and organizing. Yet, for many, that project is overwhelming. It’s easy to keep questioning where to begin or how to do it. That is why it is crucial to get to the heart of why you want to achieve that goal. If there is a disconnect, you’re much less likely to continue when times get tough.
So, why are are doing it? What would be the value in having a clean and organized home?
Is it peace of mind? To be able to function more productively? You have decided that material things no longer hold as much value in your life and you want to have time for what’s most important? You want balance?
It may sound obvious, however, you would be surprised at the amount of people who are not clearly connected to the value that the end result would bring. Additionally, many times people are aiming for something for the wrong reasons. They are too often chasing a goal because they feel that they should do it or because of the expectations they feel from others. You need to be in tune with yourself and what you truly want to be able to understand the major “why” behind what you are doing.
Once you have formulated your answer, you should be able to say something along the lines of:
I am decluttering and reorganizing my house because I value peace of mind.
Or, something such as:
I am clearing out my physical space because I desire to be more productive with my time. Having a clutter-free home that is easy to maintain will allow me the freedom to spend more time growing my business and being with my family, both of which I have identified as two of my top priorities.
It can be as simple or complex as you feel is necessary. What is important is that you know why you are doing this in the first place. When the undertaking becomes challenging, you need to be able to continually remind yourself why such a large project is so important (this will give me more time to grow my business and spend with my family!).
Second, decide on a positive mantra or affirmation that you can repeat over and over during the process. It needs to be something that feels authentic to you:
I am light and free!
I can do this!
When I take things one step at a time, answers will be revealed to me!
I am peaceful, balanced, and organized!
I am amazing, and I have what it takes to do this!
When you can remind yourself each day as to your “why” and keep your mind focused on a positive affirmation, you will begin to gain clarity on how to act. How powerful it would be to repeat to yourself something such as:
I am creating an orderly home because it will allow me to function more productively. I believe in my ability to achieve this!
Do you understand how powerful it would be to repeat the above statement daily? Do you see how answers would begin to come to you? Imagine, instead, walking around the clutter and saying over and over in your mind, “I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to begin.” How often do we this? How can you carry yourself through when you are affirming that you don’t know what to do or how to begin?
As with anything in life that you are trying to achieve, knowing your “why” and affirming yourself will help you move forward. For example, when you get clear on the true value that will be added to your life, you may realize something important such as running a race isn’t about the race or weight at all. What if the real value for the person stems from a desire to be healthy for her kids? When she pictures her kids every time she runs, it makes the run all that more meaningful. She knows exactly what to do. She feels compelled to get out and run even when it’s tough. She is fully committed to the challenge because she is clearly connected to her goal and affirms herself every step of the way. And with a clear mission and a positive mindset, she becomes unstoppable!
Live for you. Do the things that matter to you.
So many times people are trying to accomplish goals that they don’t really care about. They are disconnected from themselves, and therefore, disconnected from what they truly want in life.
What do you want to achieve in your life. Why? What is at the heart of what you want?
Forget about what everyone else wants or says about your potential.
Do you know what you want and why you want it?
When you know what you want and why you want it, you can begin to go after it. Affirm yourself each step of the way, and you will discover your limitless potential.
